Professional Ceiling Systems Designed to Meet Australian Standards

In the contemporary Australian construction landscape, the ceiling system is a critical, engineered component of a building’s structural performance, especially in relation to seismic compliance, acoustics, and durability. Studco® ceiling systems are engineered to meet this complex demand, delivering comprehensive structural solutions across a range of applications, from high-rise commercial fit outs, to residential low-profile installations.

Studco’s product philosophy centres on solving problems for its customers. Studco offers a comprehensive range of concealed suspended, direct fix, and stud ceiling systems, manufactured in Australia, using high-quality galvanised steel components. This commitment to using premium-grade materials ensures long-term system integrity and resilience under demanding Australian conditions.

Comprehensive Engineering and Code Compliance

For architects, builders and contractors, compliance is non-negotiable. Studco systems provide peace of mind through rigorous adherence to Australian and New Zealand building codes and standards. This commitment is evidenced by Studco’s comprehensive technical and engineering support, which is often required to certify complex installations and validate system performance against project-specific criteria. Studco’s qualified in-house engineers provide ceiling designs that are fully compliant to the stringent requirements of AS/NSZ 2785:2020 Suspended Ceilings – Design and Installation, and AS/NZS 1170.2:2021 Structural Design Actions and Wind Actions.

Studco’s comprehensive technical services are a key differentiator, providing concise engineering designs in critical performance areas:

Value Engineering

Studco is committed to being a solutions partner for our customers. We use carefully calculated ceiling designs to prevent overengineering. Our Structural Engineers work closely with our customers to provide ceiling specifications for a wide range of applications, including bulkheads and bracing to support ceiling mounted loads like feature panels, heavy lighting, and hanging signs. Studco also offer custom lengths for greater material utilisation, reduced on-site wastage, and optimised installation efficiency, which directly translates to project cost savings and a smaller environmental footprint.

Seismic Performance

Studco is an industry leader in providing practical, simple seismic solutions for ceilings, ensuring essential safety and integrity during earthquakes by accommodating differential movement between the primary structure (like floor slabs) and the non-structural ceiling framework. Our systems are specifically designed for seismic performance, which is critical for structures requiring resilience. Our engineering team is highly experienced in delivering complex Importance Level 4 designs; a requirement for critical facilities such as major hospitals, government buildings, and military facilities.

Acoustic Performance

Studco is highly focused on acoustic performance, recognizing that effective noise transfer management is essential for occupant comfort and regulatory compliance in modern multi-residential and commercial spaces. Our systems are engineered to meet stringent acoustic specifications by integrating with solutions like the Resilmount® isolation mounts, which significantly reduce both airborne sound transmission and impact sound.

Versatile Concealed Ceiling Solutions

Studco structures its product offering around three primary ceiling categories, each tailored to specific building requirements and installation constraints:

Concealed Suspended Ceilings

The concealed suspended system is the backbone of most commercial and large-scale applications, ideal for projects such as commercial fitouts, office buildings, and large retail spaces. This system creates a deep cavity above the finished plasterboard ceiling. The structure is built using Top Cross Rails as the primary channel and Furring Channels as the secondary channel, connected by locking keys, and suspended by spring hangers and suspension rods.

There are a few key advantages of the suspension method. It can be installed quickly and allows the ceiling to be levelled, regardless of the condition of the overhead slab or roof structure. Suspension ceiling also provides superior load distribution for heavy light fittings or air conditioning units, and flexible service integration within the ceiling void.

For acoustic ceiling requirements, the sound isolation variations of the above clips are available with the patented Resilmount thermoplastic element which attenuates sound transmission. Refer to Studco’s Resilmount® range, which includes both low-cost options and static deflection hangers and brackets.

Concealed Direct Fix Ceilings

Studco’s direct fix ceiling system produces a reduced ceiling void for applications with tight space restrictions, such as residential construction, refurbishment projects, or low-profile installations. Instead of being suspended from the structure via rods and hangers, the furring channels or battens are fixed directly to the concrete, steel, or timber substrate using low-profile clips, providing a cost-effective solution with simplified installation and reduced material use.

Studco’s direct fix ceiling systems offer a selection of specialised clips and brackets to ensure stable and code-compliant installations across diverse substrates and cavity requirements.

  • For installations fixing furring channels to concrete, the following furring channel direct fix clips/brackets are recommended: M81 angle bracket, MBF BetaFix® clips, M237 wall clip, or M239 adjustable wall clip.
  • For attaching furring channels to timber joists, the appropriate clips following direct fix clips are recommended: M26 short clip and M94 long clip.
  • For installations with tight space constraints use the SlimCeil® low clearance ceiling brackets, designed specifically for narrow cavities.
  • For residential applications focusing on the use of battens, the system is completed with batten-specific hardware, including the M13, M16, or M80 ceiling batten direct fix clips.
  • For acoustic ceiling requirements, the sound isolation variations of the above clips are available with the patented Resilmount thermoplastic element which attenuates sound transmission. Refer to Studco’s Resilmount® range, which includes both low-cost options and static deflection hangers and brackets.

Stud Ceilings

For narrow, confined areas where a standard suspended ceiling system is impractical or uneconomical, such as corridors, stairwells, and bathrooms, Studco offers stud ceilings. Stud ceilings can also be used in wide span applications, such as freestanding structures and office pods, where suspending the ceiling system is not practical.

The stud ceiling approach leverages the Studco steel stud sections used for wall construction, using them horizontally as ceiling joists. This provides a quick framing solution that is robust, load-bearing within limits, and easy to integrate with surrounding wall framing systems.

Featured Engineered Components

The performance of Studco’s complete ceiling systems relies on the meticulous engineering of its individual components, including:

Top Cross Rails (TCR)

Top Cross Rails are the primary structural support members in a suspended ceiling framework. They run the length of the ceiling and carry the load of all secondary framing, plasterboard, and light services. Their robust design is crucial for overall system stability and span capabilities.

Furring Channels

Furring Channels are the secondary framing elements that clip into the TCRs. They provide the final, closely spaced fixing points for the plasterboard. The engineering of Studco Furring Channels ensures maximum board adhesion and a level ceiling plane. Studco’s load tables are readily available to ensure correct spacing for any ceiling weight or application.

Locking Keys

Locking Keys are used to connect top cross rails to furring channels in concealed suspended ceilings. Studco’s M39 Locking Key has been expertly designed with the installer in mind, prioritising both installer safety and structural security. It incorporates safety thumb push tabs to eliminate uncomfortable sharp edges during installation, and external teeth that produce a distinct click sound to ensure a secure lock into the top cross rail, preventing detachment under downward force. The locking key also features hooked legs that grip Studco furring channels precisely to complete the stable framing grid. For complex architectural designs, the M238 Swivel Locking Key variant allows for the furring channel connection to be adjusted to non-right angles while maintaining a locked position on the top cross rail.

SlimCeil®

The SlimCeil® Ceiling System is a patented, low-clearance solution specifically engineered to meet the growing demand for maximizing space in high-rise construction by addressing the constraints of compact ceiling cavities. This Studco innovation achieves greater load strength and features a secure locking mechanism while requiring only two main components – a C-channel section and a compact bracket, which provides adjustable stand-off points covering cavity depths from a minimum of 37mm through to 108mm. This simple, yet robust, configuration makes it an easy, fast, and highly efficient answer for constructing ceilings suitable for all cladding types, engineered to support a maximum load in small ceiling voids.
