Engineering Expertise

On health facility construction projects, dependable building products and meticulous engineering are paramount. By working with Studco, the builders and contractors working on these projects had access to Studco’s renowned in-house engineering expertise. The technical team offered prompt and proactive advice, project specific designs, and all the relevant technical documentation. This facilitated the construction process to run smoothly and on-schedule. With a strong commitment to first-class service and dedicated on-site Project Engineers, Studco provided quick turnarounds on engineering solutions, design support, on-site contractor training, and thorough installation review.

The technical team’s extensive experience was crucial to creating specialised designs, specific to the unique requirements of hospital and health-sector projects. These requirements included heavy shelf loads and stringent, Importance Level 4 (IL4) seismic and wind parameters under Australia’s National Construction Code (NCC) and AS 1170.4. On these projects Studco were the trusted suppliers for quality steel framing, concealed ceiling solutions, sound isolation, architectural finishings, and impeccable technical service.

The highly qualified in-house engineering team provided many specialised designs for Studco’s Australian hospital and healthcare facility projects. These designs adhered stringently to Australian compliance standards, and included solutions for:

  • Seismic compliance
  • In-wall services
  • Heavy windows and doors
  • Patient monitors
  • Drug safes
  • Bariatric fixtures
  • Heavy vanity mounts
  • Pharmacy pass through hatches
  • Ceiling mounted curtain rails and exam lights
  • Baby and adult change tables

Saving on Custom Structural Steel

Historically, hospital construction projects have been subject to long delays and high costs due to the requirements for large quantities of custom structural steel. Heavy shelf loads, and unique structural requirements have been driving factors in these costly delays. However, with the technical team’s expert assistance, Studco’s hospital projects were able to avoid many of the costs and delays traditionally associated with custom structural steel. The combination of Studco’s innovative product range, and the technical team’s specialisation in cost-effective design often resulted in a large reduction in the need for custom structural steel. The Studco StrongArm® Structural Steel Wall Brace was central to this.

The StrongArm was an ideal solution when designing for hospital projects as it provided the required strength and durability, but saved time by preventing the need to source and install custom structural steel. The StrongArm Brace proved impressive to Studco’s project partners, as it could withstand immense loads and allowed for rapid in-wall strengthening.

In a recent hospital project in Melbourne, use of the StrongArm reduced the design requirements of custom structural steel by over 75%. This provided true cost and time-saving benefits throughout the construction process.

StrongArm was used in the following applications:

  • Internal and external openings
  • Free-standing walls
  • Half-height walls
  • Framed balustrades
  • Nib walls
  • Smoke baffles
  • Acoustic baffles
  • Free-hanging bulkheads

Studco StrongArm proved to be an easy-to-install component, saving time on-site. It is made in Australia from 12mm thick steel and is protected by a hot-dip galvanised coating for long-term corrosion resistance. The StrongArm was a solution that fit the project’s requirements and reduced the need for last minute workarounds. Studco’s builder and contractor partners were all pleased to ditch the unnecessary delays and make the switch to StrongArm innovation.
